Trophy Red Stag

This Red Stag is admiring the view.

It was the middle of the RUT (or ROAR as we call it here in NZ) and this Red Stag was holding a number of hinds and defending his patch against lesser Stags. I had been climbing steadily for the last hour when I spotted him. I stalked in from downwind and managed to get within 150m without being detected. I got setup and was taking a few images as he roared his challenges. It was then I saw a flock of finches approaching on the wing and took a shot as they passed the Stag. I was happy with the result as the finches were highlighted against the black background of the mountain in shade. A lucky moment.
